Medicare Open Enrollment, In Plain Language
What the enrollment window actually means, which dates matter, and the questions worth asking before you change a plan.

Open enrollment paperwork arrives in a thick envelope and rarely explains itself. Here is the short version, without the jargon.
The dates that matter
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs January 1 through March 31.
- Changes you make generally take effect the first day of the following month.
- If your plan is ending, you'll receive a written notice — keep it.
Ask about transportation
Many Medicaid plans and some Medicare Advantage plans include non-emergency medical transportation. Ask your plan how many trips per year are covered, whether standing dialysis schedules qualify, and whether a wheelchair-accessible vehicle changes the benefit.
“The single best question to ask: 'How do I arrange a covered ride, and who do I call if it doesn't show?'”
